Carlton Construction is honored to announce that we have donated a flagpole and flags to the Clay County, Florida Sheriff’s Office for the Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Memorial. The memorial is being constructed in honor of Detective David White and others who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

On February 16, 2012, Detective White was shot and killed during a raid of a suspected drug house in Middleburg in Clay County. The home was occupied by six squatters who were allegedly using it as a meth lab. As Detective White and another detective approached the front door, one of the six opened fire, striking both detectives. The man tried to flee through a back door, where another deputy fatally shot him. The five other squatters were taken into custody. Detective White served with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for nine years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
The memorial, scheduled for completion in May, will be located outside the front entrance of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office main building in Green Cove Springs, now renamed the Det. David White Memorial Headquarters. A blue granite monument will be inscribed with the names of the fallen, and will include benches, lighting and landscaping with a walkway of engraved brick pavers. Funds for the memorial have been raised solely through private donations and sale proceeds from the pavers. The memorial was designed by Klaybor & Associates, residential designers located in Orange Park.
“It’s our privilege to play a small part in helping establish this memorial,” said Matt Carlton, Carlton Construction president and founder. “It is important that we all remember the service and sacrifice of Detective White and others who have lost their lives protecting us.”
For information about donating to the memorial project, please contact Capt. Ronnie Gann of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (904) 264-6512.

Well…We Get Along with Architects
We came across an interesting article in a recent issue of Fine Homebuilding magazine. In “Why Can’t Architects and Builders Get Along?” authors Paul DeGroot (an architect) and David Wilkes (a builder) discuss the premise that “it often seems that those who design houses and those who build them see each other as players on opposing teams.” We at Carlton Construction would like to give our take on some of the points brought forth in the article.
We take pride in how we team with architects, whether we have worked with them for years or have just met them with a new client. If you are thinking about creating the custom residence of your dreams with an architect and builder or have some thoughts on this article, don’t hesitate to contact us – we’d love to hear from you.
